Country Risk and the Mundell-Fleming Model Applied to the 1999-2000 Argentine Experience AgEcon
Ortiz, Javier; Rodriguez, Carlos A..
In this paper we propose a modification of the traditional Mundell-Fleming model. The extended model introduces the implications of including the fiscal deficit and international reserves as determinants of the level of country risk. This slight modification of the traditional paradigm leads to radical changes in the effects that fiscal and monetary policies have in economies with high capital mobility under an extreme version of a fixed exchange rate regime (Currency Board). We use the proposed model to evaluate some of the economic policies implemented between December 1999 and March 2001 by the first economic team under the Presidency of Fernando De la Rúa in Argentina. Additionally, we suggest that some of the main results obtained from the model are...

Energy density of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Dubreuil, Julien; Petitgas, Pierre.
The energy density (E-D) of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay was determined by direct calorimetry and its evolution with size, age and season was investigated. The water content and energy density varied seasonally following opposite trends. The E-D g(-1) of wet mass (M-W) was highest at the end of the feeding season (autumn: c. 8 kJ g(-1) M-W) and lowest in late winter (c. 6 kJ g(-1) M-W). In winter, the fish lost mass, which was partially replaced by water, and the energy density decreased. These variations in water content and organic matter content may have implications on the buoyancy of the fish. The water content was the major driver of the energy density variations for a M-W basis. A significant linear relationship was...

Forest Management Zone Design with a Tabu Search Algorithm AgEcon
Krcmar, Emina; Mitrovic-Minic, Snezana; van Kooten, G. Cornelis; Vertinsky, Ilan.
Increased conflicts between timber production and environmental protection led some analysts to advocate land-use segregation, often referred to as forest management zoning. The objective of zoning is to create ecologically desirable non-fragmented forest reserves and group timber production areas. We formulate an integer programming model of forest zoning that explicitly addresses clustering of spatial units allocated to timber production and reserve zones while also promoting separation of these zones. A tabu search algorithm is developed, implemented and tested using a case study. The case study results indicate that up to 5% of the net financial return is sacrificed with a 'satisfactory' grouping of units within each zone. A 'good' separation between...

Safe Harbors: The Many Benefits of Marine Monuments and Sanctuaries ArchiMer
Bruno, John F.; Saumweber, Whitley; Crowder, Larry B.; Pendleton, Linwood; Roady, Stephen E.; Rouleau, Tracy; Sakashita, Miyoko.
The United States has been at the forefront of marine resource stewardship since the 1970s when Federal officials began to implement a series of national policies aimed at the conservation and management of public trust resources in the ocean. Beginning with the establishment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1970, soon followed by several pieces of landmark legislation, this era marked the start of a continuing effort to integrate ecosystem science with marine resource management. Among the most important bipartisan legacies of this effort has been the steady expansion of marine managed areas in U.S. coastal and ocean waters. This legacy is being challenged as the Trump Administration considers whether to alter or eliminate the...

Termite (Insecta, Isoptera) fauna from natural parks of the northeast region of Argentina Scientia Agricola
Laffont,Enrique Rafael; Torales,Gladys Josefina; Coronel,Juan Manuel; Arbino,Manuel Osvaldo; Godoy,María Celina.
The knowledge of insect biodiversity in natural areas of Argentina is limited, and termites are among the understudied taxa. In order to assess the diversity of Isoptera in some protected areas of the country, termite sampling within three National Parks of the Northeast region of Argentina was developed during 1995-1999. The results presented in this paper correspond to the Chaco National Park (Province of Chaco), Iguassu National Park (Province of Misiones) and Mburucuya National Park (Province of Corrientes). Among the four termite families recorded from Argentina, the family Termitidae was the best represented at the three sampled areas. The recorded genera (15) were: Rugitermes Holmgren and Tauritermes Krishna (Kalotermitidae), Heterotermes Frogatt...
